Located in Philadelphia, Community Legal Services is an organization helping low-income residents with legal problems by providing them with advice and representation in civil matters, advocating for their legal rights and conducting community education about legal issues. Founded in 1966, its community economic development initiative offers legal counsel to local nonprofit organizations engaged in urban revitalization, including services to support self-employment efforts. Its employment unit provides assistance to individuals in a variety of cases that arise from the employment context, including assistance for people who are denied jobs for which they have applied because of employment barriers, such as disabilities, histories of drug or alcohol addiction and criminal records. Its family advocacy unit represents parents who are involved with the child welfare system.
